Was your major or job your own choice?

Have you ever felt like your major wasn't your choice, as if you were forced into it? Whether you're an engineer, a doctor, or a lawyer, many of us have experienced this feeling, especially when your parents are the ones who chose your major with good intentions.

Are you still feeling guilty because you didn't choose your major yourself? Believe me, this guilt won't help you. You may hate your college studies or your job because it doesn't represent you, but the solution is simple.

The first thing you must do is live in the moment and forget the past and future. Everything that happened in the past was destined for you by God. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “God decreed the destinies of creation fifty thousand years before He created the heavens and the earth.”
You may think that your specialty is bad for you, but remember the Almighty’s saying: “And perhaps you dislike a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you like a thing and it is bad for you. And God knows, while you do not know.”

If you had chosen a different major, you might not have reached the person you are today and the relationships you have today. Be proud of who you are and thank God for the people you have met through your studies or work.

Now, the world is vast and the things you can learn are countless. While you're still young, don't waste your life complaining. Try something new, take courses, learn from YouTube, learn programming, or any other skill. Don't blame your major for all the blame and don't give up.

I'm a computer engineer, and I used to hate my major, but I started learning about it on my own outside of college and grew to love it. Don't expect that what college teaches you is enough to make you love your major; love requires personal effort. Look at those who love their majors and look for the reasons behind their love, not those who ran away from it.

Thank God for your job; some people just wish for a job. Don't quit your job or change your major unless you're financially secure. The future will come from your choices in the present.

Complaining and blaming your family or yourself will only make you negative, and people will distance themselves from you. Yes, perhaps most of those around you are forced to do things just like you were, but make the difference that you are a person with your own goals and represent them.

Remember that your parents want what's best for you from their perspective, not to harm you. Make your major a small part of your life, and don't let anything else define you other than your religion.

Think of the blessings you have. God Almighty said: “O mankind, remember the favor of Allah upon you.” Praise be to God that you see, hear, walk, and breathe.

Reflect on God's creation: "Do they not look at the camels - how they are created?" Ultimately, your livelihood is in God's hands and your destiny is in His. Your job is your livelihood, and your specialty is your destiny. You cannot change these two facts no matter how hard you try. Accept them and you will find great comfort, God willing.
